10.16.22 (Traditional) Invested Where You Are

Jeremiah 29:4-7, Psalm 137, Luke 17:11-19

This Sunday we start a new worship series entitled “Invested.” That might trigger thoughts of money — one might “invest” in certain stocks and bonds, for instance — but that’s not the aim here. Think rather, about how you can invest your time and effort and heart into something and then later decide whether or not it was worth that investment.

“I can’t believe I wasted so many years in that relationship!”

“I guess the boss is never going to reward all my work.”

“That movie robbed me of two hours I’m never going to get back.”

Or, it could be an investment that paid off: “That time together really made a difference; we’re like best friends now.”

“That trip to Greece was the best! Let me show you the pictures.”

“I feel like a new woman!”

“I’m glad my brother and I are talking again.”

So, the recurring question is, Into what/whom are you investing yourself? The first week deals with all that is around you. Some of you have lived in different places. I know some “Army brats” who chose one of two basic approaches: 1. We’re not going to be here long, so don’t get too involved because that just means a painful goodbye or 2. We’re not here long so let’s dive in right away.

Which one are you? Is it scary to dive in? Does it seem disloyal to old friends to make new ones? Do you feel like an alien when no one else around you pulls for the same teams, wear the same clothes, or votes like you?

In the Old Testament, we have instructions from the prophet [Jeremiah 29:4-7] about what to do when you’re dragged off to a foreign land after losing a war. Can you be faithful to God without the ways of your old world? (Check out the lament and bitterness of Psalm 137!)

In the Gospel reading [Luke 17:11-19], we have a Samaritan foreigner tossed in with nine Jews due to a shared, feared skin disease. When all of them are cured by Jesus, the foreigner is the only one who turns back with thanks.

So, what feels alien to you right now? The new Covid reality? The political acrimony? The cultural changes? When everything seems to be going to hell in a handbasket? What do you do with all of that? Can you live your life withholding investment anywhere or with anyone? Where is God leading you?

As always, I would really love to get your comments or questions — ahead of time or afterwards. Just click here.
