Our 2023 Advent Sermon Series: While We Are Waiting

Rev. Dr. Dedric Cowser • November 27, 2023

Dear Trinity Family & Friends,

I am excited to announce our 2023 Advent sermon series theme, “While We Are Waiting,” beginning Sunday, December 3rd at 9:00 a.m. Traditional Service (Sanctuary) and 11:00 a.m. Cross Connect Contemporary Service (The New Room).

Advent is a season marked by waiting; we await the celebration of Christ’s birth and anticipate his glorious return. In our modern lives, waiting can often feel like a passive, in-between state, filled with uncertainty, longing, and questions. Our prayer is that this sermon series will transform our perception of these waiting periods. We will explore Biblical insights and practical wisdom on how to actively engage in waiting, turning these moments into opportunities for spiritual growth and a deeper connection with God.

Week 1 (12.3.23): “Why Is It Hard to Wait?” (Holy Communion)

Matthew 24:36-44 (CEB)

Isaiah 55:6-13 (CEB)

The unpredictability of Christ’s return teaches us about the necessity of being prepared and vigilant in our waiting. The difficulty often lies in maintaining faith and readiness in the face of uncertainty.

Week 2 (12.10.23): “Why Do I Have to Wait?”

Luke 1:39-45 (CEB)

Genesis 18:1-2, 9-15 (CEB)

Sometimes we must wait because our journeys are intricately woven into a larger, divine narrative. Waiting can be a period of spiritual growth and strengthening of faith, as we anticipate the fulfillment of God’s promises in our lives.

Week 3 (12.17.23): “What Happens While I Wait?”

Mark 1:1-8 (CEB)

Numbers 14:1-9 (CEB)

During periods of waiting, significant groundwork is being laid—spiritually and practically, paving the way for what is to come, just as John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus.

Week 4 (12.24.23): “What If I Stop Waiting?”

John 1:9-18 (CEB)

I Samuel 8:4-22 (CEB)

Ceasing to wait can lead to missing the profound revelations and blessings awaiting those who persist in faith and anticipation.

May this Advent be a time of sacred anticipation and transformative waiting for each of us. Let us prepare our hearts together for the coming of Christ, our eternal hope and joy.

Blessings,

Pastor Dedric
