4.27.25 (Confirmation Sunday): Living the Yes

Rev. Dr. Dedric Cowser • April 21, 2025

John 20:24-29, Ephesians 3:16-21

Dear Trinity Family & Friends,

This Sunday will be a deeply meaningful day in the life of our church as we celebrate Confirmation Sunday. Our confirmands—students who have spent time learning, asking questions, serving others, and growing in their understanding of faith—are ready to take the next step in their journey by affirming their commitment to Christ and becoming full members of Trinity United Methodist Church.

The message for this special day is entitled “Living the Yes,” and it’s rooted in John 20:24–29 and Ephesians 3:16–21 (CEB). In the Gospel of John, we witness the familiar story of Thomas—sometimes called the doubter—but what stands out is his honest need for connection and reassurance. When Jesus shows up, He meets Thomas with compassion, not judgment. In response, Thomas offers one of the most profound affirmations of faith in all of Scripture: “My Lord and my God.” It is a moment of transformation—a movement from doubt to trust, from hesitation to yes.

Paul’s words in Ephesians offer a vision for what comes next. He prays that believers will be strengthened with power through God’s Spirit, deeply rooted in love, and filled with the fullness of God. He reminds us that this journey of faith is not about perfection, but about being open—open to the Spirit’s work within us, and confident that God can do far more than we could ask or imagine.

Confirmation Sunday is a visible reminder of what it means to “live the yes.” These young people are not just reciting answers—they are choosing a life of faith, one step at a time, and inviting us to remember our own commitment. It’s a powerful moment not only for them, but for all of us as a community of faith. As we surround them with support, we are reminded that our “yes” to God is not a one-time event, but a lifelong journey.

This is a meaningful Sunday to bring your loved ones. Whether they are curious, committed, or somewhere in between, they’ll find a message of grace, belonging, and hope. At Trinity, we walk this path together—and we celebrate each step forward as Trinity Together.

As we prepare for worship, here are a few questions for reflection:

  1. In John 20:29, Jesus says, “Happy are those who don’t see and yet believe.” What does that kind of faith look like in your life today?
  2. How does Thomas’s honest doubt give you permission to bring your full self—including your questions—into relationship with Jesus?
  3. Ephesians 3:17 talks about being “rooted and grounded in love.” How do you see that kind of deep spiritual foundation growing in you or in our confirmands?
  4. Paul ends his prayer with a bold declaration of God’s power at work within us (Ephesians 3:20–21). How have you seen God do more than you could ask or imagine?

I’m so grateful to serve a church where we celebrate the movement of the Spirit in people of all ages. Let’s show our confirmands the strength of the community surrounding them, and let’s each commit again to live our own “yes” with courage, trust, and love.

See you Sunday!
