3.26.23 (Both) The World Turned Upside Down: A Different Story

Matthew 20:1-16

As you re-read the story Jesus tells [Matthew 20:1-16], pay attention to the character with whom you identify.

(Parables aren’t always analogies; they don’t always have a one-to-one relationship with the world – the ‘fox’ may not mean Herod, the ‘boat’ maybe isn’t really the Church, etc.)

Nevertheless, do you see yourself more as the laborers who were hired early and have been working in the hot sun all day? Were they treated fairly? Sure, the owner can do what he likes, but still – how will he get laborers in the future if he doesn’t properly reward hard work from people like you?

Do you identify with the laborers hired last, for only an hour or so? Do you feel lucky to have gotten paid so much and are inclined to get out of there before someone changes the owners’ mind?

Or do you identify with the owner, rightfully having the power to decide who gets paid what, even if on a whim?

In Jesus’ original audience, who do you think saw themselves as what? Who were the folks most likely to see themselves as having earned their place with God? Who saw themselves as just slipping in, grateful to receive anything?

What does this parable say about GOD? What does it say about “fair’ treatment? What does it say about PEOPLE – what are they like? How would modern media react if that story was told today? And what does it say about YOU?

How does this story – and Jesus’ ministry in general – turn the world upside down?

I look forward to seeing you in worship in either service this Sunday… and every Sunday in Lent.
